GEO emerged in 1979-80 with a view to promote solidarity amongst employers and facilitate cordial relationships between employers and employees. This was in line with the country's bi-partite approach.

In 1981, GEO was registered as employers' trade union to play a crucial role to inculcate culture of trust and faith through tri-partism i.e. the government was also involved to create an amicable environment for industries.

Since more than three decades, GEO had a strong role to play to harmonize industrial relations and brought about the change in work culture, ethos and environment.
